This latest advance in touchscreen technology from researchers at Carnegie Mellon University uses a thin layer of latex which can be inflated in certain areas to create buttons on the touchscreen.

When the buttons are not in use you have a perfectly flat touchscreen but when required certain areas can raise to help users interact with the touchscreen.
